Teens and young adults are the fastest growing segment of new HIV infections in South Africa. The sobering reality is that half of 15 year olds will die from AIDS before they are 60. While we don't promote teens having sex, we cannot stop them. We can however show them how to minimize risking their lives.
While education is at the heart of what we do, education alone is not enough to change behaviour. The celebrities on our MTV-style, online, interactive videos talk about HIV/AIDS and encourage HIV testing. Shout-It-Now's trained counsellors provide voluntary counselling and HIV testing at the school immediately following the on-line programme so everyone can know their status. Anyone that has waited for the results of an HIV test will know that testing brings home the reality of HIV/AIDS in a very personal way. In order to encourage participation in the programme small rewards such as cell phone minutes, music and clothing are offered.
